Mine has been a journey from seeing the nation state of Israel as a fulfilment of prophesy to that of a rogue state while Palestine has emerged from the shadows, revealing itself as a rich tapestry of culture, faith and history.
I became a committed Christian in my twenties and was immersed in a theology which I now recognise as fundamentalist. In the years preceding Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in 2014 I had been forced to challenge the faith I had lived by for some years including what I had been taught about Israel. After stories of the harassment of Palestinians in the West Bank were dismissed by a Christian friend of some years, it was clear where my loyalty would lie. By the time of Israel’s brutal siege of Gaza in 2014 I needed no convincing.
Up until October of 2023 I’d followed the Israel/Palestine issue closely but never felt empowered to do much about it. Becoming part of an active group after October 7th felt like a homecoming. I’d written songs previously including a few instrumentals but had never been asked to compose a theme for a video. My inspiration came from Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending.
